Abstract
The purpose of the present study is to analyze news frame and tone of articles on mental heath with a view to prividing a desirable direction for news coverage related to mental health in future. For this purpose, we conducted a content analysis based on mental health articles reported on in 13 major daily newspapers over the past two years. As a result, we found that the frequencies of mentioning ¡®suicide-¡¯ and ¡®depression-¡¯ related words were higher than others. In addition, there were many articles of a negative tone, and in terms of news frame, human interest frame, conflict frame, and social frame were more frequently observed than others in order. Even with the same mental health issue, negative tones are different depending on the types of authors and articles, etc. Finally, a crisis frame, a conflict frame, and a social frame were more strongly associated with negative tones, while a preventive frame was more strongly associated with positive tones. In the face of increasing social interest and policy efforts in mental health, it is expected that the present study provide people with accurate information on mental health, and to help to prepare a desirable media guideline.
